A PAIR OF MONUMENTAL VICTORIAN PARCEL-GILT SILVER TANKARDS
Mark of Charles Frederick Hancock, London, one with date letter for 1869, the other 1884
Cylindrical on a domed spreading foot chased with putti, bearded masks and hounds within foliage and fruit on a matted ground, below an applied beaded border, the body elaborately cast and chased with a scene of Romans in combat against Visigoths (each tankard with different composition), the front applied with a cast figure of a spread eagle, the handle formed as a satyr astride a scroll holding aloft two young satyrs entwined in amorous dalliance and headed by a winged sea-monster, the hinged domed cover chased with a scene of Knights engaging in combat and surmounted by a water-leaf finial with central flange headed by a plain knop, marked on body and cover, also stamped HANCOCKS & CO 39 BRUTON ST LONDON
