'Bergner's work is influenced by Old Masters as well as traditional Greek mythology. The subject of Icarus was described by Bergner "There is not an artist who does not paint this story". The choice is not only because of the beauty of the myth but also because of its moral. Icarus has committed the ultimate sin - that of Hubris' (C. Rubin, Yosl Bergner - A Retrospective, Tel Aviv, 2000, p. 40), trying to overcome the limitations of man and to behave as an equal of the gods.
In Icarus Falling we are confronted by an empty room, the floor resembles the moon's surface, carpeted with puddles of water into which the hero is about to fall. A focused light illuminates the room from an unknown source providing the space with a surrealist feeling.
