This 'Grecian' writing-table relates to a group of almost identical tables, some of which have been associated with the Regency cabinet-maker, John McLean (d. 1825). A table, formerly in the collection of Adelbert Salusbury Cockayne, 5th Baron Brownlow (d. 1927), Belton House Lincolnshire, was sold anonymously, Sotheby's New York, 18 October 1997, lot 502. Other examples of this model are one sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 12 March 1970, lot 24. Another sold from the collection of the late the Hon. Mrs Pretyman, Orwell Park, Suffolk, sold Sotheby's London, 7 July 1995, lot 138 and one sold anonymously, in these Rooms, 11 November 1999, lot 60 (£54,300, inc. premium).
