This pair of chairs, with neo-classically inspired fluted frieze and legs, retains some rococo influence through its scrolled serpentine arm supports. They are almost identical to a single chair in the Victoria and Albert Museum (ref W.8-1955) and illustrated in M. Tomlin, Catalogue of Adam Period Furniture, London, 1982, p. 142, cat. no. Q/6. The latter and the present pair relate to a pair of chairs illustrated in the Norman Adams Yearbook 1985, pl. 20. A closely related matched pair of chairs, but lacking central patera, was sold in these Rooms, 12 February 1998, lot 382.
