The outscrolled arms, serpentine back and leaf-carved cabriole legs of the sofa relate to the suite of seat furniture almost certainly made for the saloon at Hackwood Park, Hampshire, for Charles Powlett (1719-1765), 5th Duke of Bolton, before 1765 (E. Lennox-Boyd, 'The 1765 Great Hall Furniture', Hackwood, Christie's house sale catalogue, 16-19 April 1998 and lot 84). A further related sofa was sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 8 May 1989, lot 35, the latter was illustrated in F. Lenygon, Furniture in England from 1660-1760, London, 1914, plate 136.
