George Garrard (1760-1826) was patronised by Samuel Whitbread II (d. 1815) of Southill. He started life as a painter, specialising in animals, and was a pupil of Sawrey Gilpin. Garrard and Gilpin both worked at Southill, but gradually Garrard gave up painting for sculpture. Many of his pieces, including busts and overdoors, still remain at Southill, including the marble bust of Wellington, from which this lot is taken (Southill, A Regency House, London, 1951, figs. 11, 73-73, 85-87).
