Shown seated with hands in abhayamudra, wearing priests' robes molded with decorative borders, covered in a dark russet-colored lacquer, the face well modeled with long arched brows and knobby forehead and covered in a copper-colored lacquer detailed in red, black and yellowish gold

Stylistically this figure is very similar to a Hongzhi period cast-iron figure of a seated luohan bearing a dated inscription corresponding to 1497, illustrated in Zhongguo lidai jinian foxiang tudian (Illustrated Chinese Buddha Images through the Ages), Beijing, 1995, no. 326 and p. 551.
