Charles Lock was the son of William Lock I (1767-1847) of Norbury Park, Surrey. The Lock family was the centre of an artistic circle in London and at Norbury, including such figures as Samuel Johnson, the Burneys, the Angenstein family and Henry Fuseli, R.A.. Sir Thomas Lawrence, P.R.A., was also part of the circle and painted several members of the family including Charles Lock and his wife.
