Lot Essay

For a discussion of this type of still-life decoration at Capodimonte see Angela Carola Perrotti, op. cit. (Naples 1986), pp. 108-119. Although still-life subjects have often been given to Giovanni Caselli, Carola Perrotti inclines towards Giacomo Nani who was recorded as a painter of animali e cose naturali. The form of this salt appears to be unrecorded in the Capodimonte literature, although the rococo moulding is very similar to that of the widely illustrated mirror-frame of the same period at Capodimonte.
