A pair of Siena (Terchi) maiolica vases and covers
Circa 1730
Of oval section, the shoulders with applied gilt bearded mermen masks flanked by shells and scrolling foliage between gilt entwined dolphin handles, painted by Bartolomeo Terchi with continuous seascapes below with putti, nereids, mermaids and mermen cavorting in the sea, embracing and riding dolphins, the lower parts with gilt ropetwist ornament above blue gadroons, the waisted gilt feet on square plinths, the waisted necks with trees and shrubs issuing from rocks below rims with brown ovolo ornament divided by gilt foliage, the gilt oval moulded covers with ball finials (very slight chipping to extremities, flaking and slight wear to gilding)

Bartolomeo Terchi (1691-after 1753) was born in Rome and worked at the San Quirico d'Orcia potteries from 1717 until 1728 with his brother, Antonio (Ferdinando Maria Campani also worked there before later working in Siena). He finally moved back to Rome in 1753.
