Moni Adams (in Africa, the Art of a Continent, 1995, p.462) states: The small Wenion masks illustrate typical variations [of larger masks] known and used currently. Cat. 5.128r, [the present mask] with its slit eyes and cylindrical projections ('cheek-bones'), exaggerated features and palm-fibre beard, is readily recognisable as a model of the youthful warrior masker who does not engage in the overtly threatening behaviour of the 'fighting warriors ' but displays remarkable spurts of energetic dancing.
