Private George Mayne enlisted in the 58th Foot in early 1878 and was embarked with the Regiment for South Africa in April 1879. Thereafter he saw continuous service until his death at Mount Prospect Hospital on 21.2.1881, the Regimental History noting him as a Majuba Hill casualty, presumably an error of transcription since that memorable action was fought six days later.
