JUSTINIAN DIGEST xxv-2. Miniature on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[Bologna, ca. 1300]
Leaf 448 x 286mm, initial 210 x 65 mm. A rectangular scene divided by pillars into three sections. A judge in orange robe in the centre, at his left a woman and an advocate, at his right two women, one of the plaintiffs holding the pleas, below an advocate's sheepskin cloak on a pole, mostly grisaille, all on blue ground. Text double column, 42 lines, with surrounding smaller commentary, written in brown ink in a gothic rotunda, large initials in blue and red.

The miniature is at the head of the digest discussing a dispute about expenses claimed for a dowry. U. Bauer-Eberhardt, Die italienischen Miniaturen des 13-16 Jahrhunderts, Munich: Staatliche Graphische Sammlung (1984), no. 28, describes a scene from the Decretum Gratiani apparently by the same unidentified artist.
