Fouquier-Tinville was the public prosecutor to the revolutionary Tribunal from 1793. He superintended all the political executions during the Reign of Terror until his arrest in July 1794, sending not only his enemies (including Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette) to execution but also his friends such as Robespierre, Danton and Hébert. He was himself guillotined in 1795. This may have been one of his last official orders.
