FIRST EDITION. Cecily Isabel Fairfield (1892-1983), ("Cissie"), used the nom de plume of Rebecca West. She was a novelist, journalist and critic, and published eight novels. She began a turbulent ten-year love affair with H. G. Wells in 1913, and bore him a son. She was described by George Bernard Shaw as handling a pen "as brilliantly as ever I could and much more savagely". Wade 182.
