John Gantz, father of Justinian Gantz (see lot 85), was described in the manuscript list of Madras inhabitants dated 25 March 1819 as 'Architect. Native of India'. Nothing is recorded about his architectural activities unless of course the houses depicted by him and his son were their own designs. A number of watercolours of architectural and archaeological subjects are held in the India Office Library.
