Boucher studied sculpture under Chapu, Falguière and Mercié, before exhibiting his work and winning many honours during the early 20th century. Among his important public commissions is the impressive Monument to Victor Hugo in Guernsey (1908).

Although not bearing Boucher's signature, a signed bronze of the same model, formerly in Whixley Hall, North Yorkshire, was sold at Philips, 30 November 1994, lot 142. Another unsigned marble version sold Sotheby's London, 26 November, 1996, lot 174.
