Previously attributed to Edward Bower (fl.1629-1666), given on the strength of the other Guise family portraits formerly at Elmore Court, the present lot is now considered to be by an unknown English hand of the mid 1630s. The traditional elements of the old attribution to Bower are absent, such as pillars, fountains and drapery, and the rather plain, stark background and stiff nature of the sitter point to a more provincial painter.
