Private William Stow was born in Camberwell, London and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade at Winchester in November 1889, aged 19 years. Initially posted to the 4th Battalion in India, he returned home in June 1894 and was transferred to the Army Reserve in November 1896. In October 1899, however, he was recalled to the Colours and saw active service in South Africa until August 1902. Stow was finally released in the following October.
