Colour-Sergeant Charles William Shilling was born in the Parish of Wye, Kent and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade at Winchester in July 1892, aged 18 years. His subsequent services with the 1st Battalion in South Africa also won him entitlement to the King's South Africa Medal and he was discharged in October 1913, having been advanced to Colour-Sergeant in August 1907 and awarded the L.S. and G.C. Medal.
