Private Thomas McKenzie was born in Manchester and enlisted in the Rifle Brigade in May 1898, aged 22 years. Arriving in South Africa in October 1899, he was severely wounded in the action at the Gold Mine, Grootvlei on 26.12.1900, while serving in the 1st Battalion. McKenzie returned home in October 1902, served briefly in Malta between 1904-05 and was transferred to the Army Reserve in May 1906. Also the recipient of the King's South Africa Medal, he was finally discharged in May 1910.
