Mrs Ulwa Neergaard has kindly confirmed the authenticity of this work.
Carl Larsson executed this drawing as a present for his brother-in-law, Frank Bather, who was celebrating his 50th birthday on 17th February 1913.

The text of the present drawing aids us in understanding the subject of the work, and the reason for which Larsson chose its subject. The words read as follows: "AHOY! NEWS! VERY INTERESTING! THE 17 FEBRUARY 3,000,063 TELEGRAM FROM THE PALEONTOLOGIST INSTITUTE, WIMBLEDON. In a mountain of glass from the 'suffragett' period today was found A FOSSIL from the 'eon' years ago extincted of animal spcies HOMO SAPIENS!! For every new discovery it is more and more obvious that we derive from this low standing ape. This is certainly humiliating for the feeling - but science works objectively and regardlessly! Tjo!!"

The work must have certainly been intended as a humouristic caricature from the artist to Bather, who was a geologist at the Natural History Museum in London.
