This 'sarcophagus' form of sideboard wine-cooler, with reed-gadrooned lid and canted corner pilasters terminating in bacchic lion-paws, evolved from a pattern in Thomas Sheraton's Cabinet Dictionary, 1803 (pl. 68). The same features appear on a wine-cooler of possible Edinburgh manufacture, while fluted pilasters appear on a related wine-cooler pattern in the Edinburgh Book of Prices of 1811 (D. Jones, 'Scottish Cabinet Makers' Price Books, 1805-1825', Regional Furniture, 1989, figs. 9 and 10, pp. 34 and 37).
