A similarly carved octagonal food box dated to the late 14th/early 15th century, formerly from the Florence and Herbert Irving Collection and now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is illustrated in East Asian Lacquer, no. 12; where the author describes the contrast between the Yuan style with its high relief, deep cuts and narrow grooves with later Ming dynasty carving where the scrolls rises gently and has wider grooves with U-shaped troughs, ibid, p. 57.
Food trays of the present form are also carved in cinnabar lacquer, such as the six-tiered square box and cover sold in these Rooms, 13 January 1987, lot 262.
