A RARE LATE MING LARGE CLOISONNE ENAMEL BASIN
WANLI SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The interior medallion enamelled with an ascending yellow five-clawed dragon in pursuit of a similar red descending dragon amongst scrolling lotus blooms on a turquoise ground, the slightly sloping well with scrolling chrysanthemum on a pale greenish turquoise ground, the flat broad mouth rim decorated with Buddhist emblems, the exterior with similar emblems repeated above foliage, the base with eight lotus heads encircling the mark (minor enamel losses)

A larger Wanli-marked dish (50 cm. diam.) with similar dragons but in reverse colours, was sold in these Rooms, 22 March 1993, lot 570. Compare also with two dragon chargers illustrated by H. Garner, Chinese and Japanese Cloisonne Enamels, plate F, with an illustration of the mark, op. cit., fig. 47C. A box and cover with similar stylised floral scrolls bearing a Wanli mark is in the Pierre Uldry Collection, illustrated by H. Brinker and A Lutz, Catalogue, no. 112.
