A FINE FAMILLE VERTE MONTH CUP
ENCIRCLED KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

Decorated for the seventh month, the delicately potted sides finely painted in bright enamels with a kingfisher descending towards a pair of mandarin ducks swimming in a lotus pond with a large lotus flower in bloom, the reverse inscribed with a ten-character couplet and a seal shang, 'to appreciate'

Lot Essay

The couplet reads Genshi nizhong yu, xincheng luxia, zhu, '(Lotus) roots are as jade, untainted in the mud, pearl-like are the dewdrops gathered on its heart-shaped leaves'.

A Kangxi seventh-month cup from the Palace Museum, Beijing, is illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, 1989, p. 65, no. 48; while two from the Baur Collection are illustrated by J. Ayers, The Baur Collection Geneva, vol. IV, 1974, nos. A556 and 557.
