A FINE AND RARE RU-TYPE VASE, FANGHU
YONGZHENG SEAL MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The pear-shaped vase is solidly potted and raised from a splayed foot to the slightly flared mouth with moulded lip, applied at the waisted neck with three evenly-spaced horizontal ribs, the lower two ribs framing a band of stylised scrolls, flanked at either side of the neck with a pair of angular lug-handles, the glaze of bluish-grey tone and applied on the underside of the base bearing the nianhao in underglaze-blue

Two vases of the same design are in the National Palace Museum, both included in the Exhibition of Qing Dynasty Monochrome Wares, are illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 80 (smaller in size at 25.9 cm. high); and no. 81 (47.6 cm. high).

A related example also with a ru-type glaze decorated with horizonal ribs dividing the waisted neck was sold in Hong Kong, 3 May 1994, lot 110.
