A RARE COPPER-RED AND ENAMEL-DECORATED 'BEEHIVE' WATERCOUPE
KANGXI SIX-CHARACTER MARK AND OF THE PERIOD

The vessel has steep sides terminating in a lipped rim enclosing the wide mouth, finely painted on each side with a single rose spray in copper-red attached to a thorny stem in aubergine, the leaves and rose hips in shades of green enamel

Compare the waterpots of this type decorated with branches bearing a single rose in underglaze red and a single rose hip, in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Kangxi, Yongzheng, Qianlong, 1989, p. 42, pl. 25; and another in the Baur Collection, illustrated by Ayers in the Catalogue, vol. IV, Geneva, 1974, no. A537. A very similar example was sold in our New York Rooms, 21 September 1995, lot 229.

A related waterpot of this type but with two blossoms on the branch, was included in the Special Inaugural Exhibition of Ming and Qing Polychrome Wares from the Collection of the Tianminlou Foundation, Christie's Shanghai, 1994, is illustrated in the Catalogue, no. 7.
