The present work is a study for the pastel Violette Heymann, 1910 (A. Wildenstein, op. cit., no. 96; coll. The Cleveland Museum of Art). Redon portrays the adolescent niece of Paris collector Marcel Kapferer as she is absorbed in reverie. In the finished version the artist extended the left-hand side of the composition to incorporate a profusion of exotic flowers.
