The earliest recorded painting by Vinckboons is dated 1601. The present work, executed within a few years of this date seems to be dateable to circa 1604-10. During this period the manneristic representation of the landscape, with stylized leaves to the shimmering branches of the trees, remained close to those of Gillis van Coninxloo, and the villages were peopled with many, generic and brightly colored, figures. Comparison can be made between the present lot and A Village Kermesse sold at Sotheby's, New York, 9 June, 1983, lot 135 ($52,800), and with the Landscape with a Wedding, dated 1604, in the collection of Vittorio Duca, Milan.
