Son of the clockmaker, Jonathan Jessop (1771-1857), Joseph trained under his father in York, Pennsylvania. As the elder Jessop became involved with a number of projects, including a branch of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, cotton mills and the York National Bank, Jonathan took over the family business (Eckhardt, Pennsylvania Clocks and Clockmakers (New York, 1955), p. 216).
