Lieutenant Harold William Froud, aged 28 years, from Bournemouth died of wounds on 27.7.1917 and is buried in Achiet-Le-Grande Communal Cemetery Extension. An excellent footballer, Froud played for Bournemouth F.C. at wing half before the outbreak of hostilities. He joined the Artist's Rifles as a volunteer and was commissioned into the Durham Light Infantry on 30.10.1915. On active service in France he was wounded by rifle shot in the right arm (September, 1916) and during his second period on the Front he contracted trench fever and was sent to the Riviera to recuperate. He returned to France and during a raid on enemy trenches was mortally wounded on 26.7.1917 and died the following day in a Casualty Clearing Station.
