Private Clarence Bell, aged 21 years, of Ipswich, Suffolk was killed in action on 23.10.1914 and is commemorated on Ploegsteert Memorial. The 2nd Battalion moved into front line trenches on the 23rd and was attacked the same day by a strong enemy force which broke through the line held by 'C' Company but were ejected by a series of bayonet charges. 'A' and 'B' Company's line although forced back was held by a Sergeant and eight men.
