A LOUIS XV ORMOLU BRACKET CLOCK
Circa 1745, the movement signed Gilbert A Paris, the case attributed to Edm-Jean Gallien
The circular glazed enamelled dial with Roman and Arabic chapters, set within a rocaille case cast with acanthus, scrolling foliage and brickwork and surmounted by Cupid seated on a cloudburst, the sides cast with further rocaille and scrolling foliage and framing panels of pierced floral trellis, the shell-centered apron supported on cabriole legs, the pierced bracket cast with a dragon emerging from acanthus and C-scroll cartouches and above a tapering acanthus boss, stamped twice with the 'C' couronn poinon, the movement with silk-suspended pendulum and pull cord repeat on two bells with hour and half hour strike via countwheel on backplate, signed 'Gilbert A Paris'

The C couronn poinon was a tax mark employed in France between March 1745 and February 1749 on any alloy containing copper.

Probably Abraham Gilbert (died in 1752), mitre 1 October 1725, recorded at the Place Dauphine in 1724. Gilbert is known to have used cases by Latz and Saint-Germain.

Celebrating the Triumph of Love, this model of bracket clock belongs to a group that can be attributed to the fondeur Edm-Jean Gallien. Elected matre on 13 December 1747, Gallien was patronised by both Louis XV and Blondel de Gagny, and is known to have worked in collaboration with both the marchand-mercier Lazare Duvaux and the bniste Jean-Franois Oeben. A bracket clock of this model, signed by Gallien and formerly at Nasby Castle, Sweden, was sold from the Lamm Collection, American Art Galleries, New York, 21-22 February 1923, lot 892.

Two further examples of this model, both formerly in the Fremersdorf Collection, are recorded:- one, with movement by Guillaume Dauthiau, is illustrated in Tardy, La Pendule Franaise, Paris, 3rd ed., 1967, col.pl. after p.188; the other, also stamped with the 'C' couronn poinon and with movement by Julien Le Roy (appointed horloger du roi in 1739), was sold anonymously at Christie's London, 10 December 1992, lot 144.
