Two autograph letters, signed 'Arthur Wellesley', both Seringapatam, 1801, to Lt. Col. MacWhirter, 23 May, 2pp, folio, reiterating complaints received from the inhabitants of the surrounding countryside about followers in MacWhirter's camp and warning that if nothing is done, the matter will be brought before the Governor (some soiling at edges); to J. H. Piele, 10 August, 2pp, integral blank with address panel, stamped 'Post Free Seringapatam', detailing payments and travel re-imbursements made to 'Shekur Oollah Khan', requesting a receipt for articles delivered (seal hole, minor fold tears and spotting).

Wellesley travelled to India with his regiment, the 33rd Foot, in 1797 and was to stay in the country until 1805. As brigade commander under General George Harris he took part in the successful Seringapatan expedition against Tippoo Sahib, Sultan of Mysore and was subsequently administrator of the territory.
