This netsuke interestingly combines utensils from both the classical Japanese chanoyu [tea ceremony] and the Chinese-style sencha which became increasingly popular from the 18th century. For illustrations of the multifarious sencha utensils, see Patricia J. Graham, Tea of the Sages: The Art of Sencha (Honolulu, 1998), pp. 214-6.
