Venus and Adonis

There is an engraving by Wallerand Vaillant of a lost work by Lairesse, of the same composition as this picture, but reversed. Vaillant died in 1677 providing a terminus post quem for the prototype's execution (see A. Roy, Grard de Lairesse (1640-1711), Paris, 1992, p.242, no.P64).
