Washington's journey was commissioned by Virginia Governor Robert Dinwiddie to report on the French presence on the Ohio River. The Journal covers the period from 31 October 1753 to 16 January 1754 and records the his councils with the French forces on the Ohio River as well as his contacts with the Indians west of the Alleghanies. Dinwiddie's letter to the commandant of the French forces at Fort Le Boeuf demanding their withdrawal and a translation of the French officer's reply are printed at the end. The continued French presence in the area, along with other factors, eventually led to the French and Indian War.
