The Farmer's Guard were originally known as the Burgher Police. As with the National Scouts and Orange Colony Volunteers they were deeply unpopular with Boers who fought to the bitter end. The employment of surrendered Burghers by Kitchener aroused the strong resentment of those on commando and many members of the Farmer's Guard did not claim their Medals at the end of the War.
