The Duke of Cornwall (later King George V) embarked on a tour of the Empire on H.M.S. Ophir in 1901. The Royal Party landed at Durban in August 1901 and visited Pietermaritzburg where the Duke held an investiture for Victoria Cross and Distinguished Service Order recipients.
