Shaw Sparrow remarked that it is 'One of the best oil-colours that I have seen by this artist'. Little is known of William Smith who exhibited nearly fifty pictures at leading London exhibitions between 1813 and 1847 from addresses both in London and in Shropshire. He moved to Shrewsbury in the 1830s and his later paintings were executed in the Welsh borders.
