William Webb originated from Tamworth, Staffordshire, and began his career as a clock and watchmaker before turning to painting. He is known to have exhibited six pictures at the Royal Academy between 1819 and 1828, and listed the Duke of Richmond among his patrons. Webb moved to Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, where he eventually died leaving eleven children, the fourth of whom was the sporting artist Edward Walter Webb (1810-1851).
