An early work by the artist, executed one year after his travels through Germany in the company of Hendrik van de Sande Bakhuyzen. Compare with the painting of travellers crossing a river from the same year in the Rijksmuseum Krller-Mller, Otterloo, inv.no. 675-22 (see L. van Tilborgh, Op Zoek naar de Gouden Eeuw, 1986, illus. p. 150).
