Please note the sitters for these portraits are Cyrus Spicer (1750-1826) and his wife, Mary Eddy Spicer (1750-1828), of Pine Plains (Dutchess County), New York. The pair was sold as lot 41 in Sotheby's American Paintings and Prints sale on November 21, 1980. At the time, they descended in the family of the sitters. The portaits are discussed in Mary Black, Barbara Holdridge and Lawrence Holdridge, Ammi Phillips (New York: Clarkson N. Potter, Inc, 1969) p.46, nos. 30 & 31, with the sitters incorrectly identified as Captain Syrus and Tammy Cross Spicer.
