Composite Type: The Thoroughbred Horse was included in the artist's series of Champion Animals. The concept emerged from equine commissions as well as a horse which his mother purchased at Tattersalls. "I looked into a box-stall and saw a sleek black thoroughbred, every inch a race horse, with a head that was the essence of quality, large lustrous eyes, tapering nozzle, deep jaw, small sharply stencilled ears, a head reminiscent of, in fact very similar to his Arab ancestor, and the the highly bred horses painted by Alfred de Dreux...He was a well-bred, being a son of Simonian by St. Simon, both great sires in their day." (M. Cormack, Champion Animals, Richmond, 1996, p. 48)
