Bred by Andrew Wilkinson in 1734, Sedbury was by Old Partner out of Lord Darcy's Old Montague Mare. He was purchased as a yearling by Mr. Mann for whom he won the Four Year Old Plate at Hambleton in November 1738 well as races at Carlisle, Durham, and York. He was sold to Mr. Martindale for whom he won four Kings Plates and numerous races at Epsom, Guilford, Winchester, Stockbridge, Gloucester, Oxford, and Newmarket, before being retired to stud in Yorkshire.
This painting probably commemorates Sedbury's final race, winning a 60 Guineas Plate at Newmarket on 26 March 1744 beating Brisk and three other horses.
Engravings of Sedbury after Seymour by Thomas Butler, M. Gauci, T. Bradford, and Houston are recorded.
There are several similar small paintings by the artist of other horses in the Paul Mellon Collection (J. Egerton, British Sporting and Animal Paintings: The Paul Mellon Collection, New Haven, 1978, pp. 41-42, nos. 43 and 44).
