ENGLISH, SECOND OR THIRD QUARTER 17TH CENTURY

Although often seen in pewter, 'ball knop' trumpet candlesticks are rarely seen in brass. However, due to the close relationship between contemporary brass and pewter designs and from contemporary references to 'bawl candlesticks' in 1612-13 (see Bangs, loc. cit.), it is reasonable to assume that the form already existed in brass as well as in pewter in the early 17th century. This example is of single-casting construction with an integrally cast platform inside the shaft to prevent the candle from falling through.
