Portrait of a Gentleman, half-length, in a brown coat

The Dutch painter, draughtsman and engraver, Dirck Maas accompanied King William III to England and joined him on his Irish campaign. He is known to have been in England in 1690 when he produced a large drawing of the Battle of the Boyne, signed and dated 1 July 1690, which served as the basis for various paintings of this subject. Maas, was back in the Netherlands by 1693 and continued working for King William III.
