The exterior decorated in iroe togidashie and inlaid kirikane and aogai on a nashiji ground with butterflies among large peony blossom, foliage and scrolling karakusa, the inside of the cover and the exterior of the inner tray similarly decorated in gold togidashie on a mura-nashiji ground with butterflies, the interior of the box and the tray lined in gold brocade woven with chrysanthemums, the bases nashiji, silver side-fittings modelled as butterflies, lead rims, double fitted box

This tebako is a fairly close copy of a 13th-century box with gilt copper butterfly fittings from the Hatakeyama Collection of Tokyo registered as a National Treasure. It is one of several boxes made in the Meiji Period based on or using motifs derived from masterpieces in temple collections.
