Probably related to a painting of the same subject but of vertical format, formerly on the Paris art market and published by J. Zimmer, Joseph Heinz der Ältere als Maler, Weissenhorn, 1971, no. A17, illustrated.
Despite the different format, both drawing and painting share a similar disposition of the figures and the setting of the scene with a view outside the grotto in the background. Diana, sitting slightly elevated on the right, is pointing at Callisto accusing her of having broken the vow of chastity. Callisto is seen reclining on the left while the nymphs are drawing back her clothes, thus reveiling her pregnancy.
A modello for the painting is in the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, and an oval chalk drawing of the same subject is in the library of the Öttingen-Wallerstein collection (inv. 11/55), Harberg, Germany; Essen, Villa Hgel, Prag um 1600: Kunst und Kultur am Hofe Rudolfs II., exhib. catalogue, 1988, pp. 349-50.
